Bishop of Auckland

The dahlia with foliage as dramatic as the flower.

🌸

Bishop of Auckland opens a rich crimson against a backdrop of near-black, bronze-tinged leaves, a built-in contrast that no other plant in your garden can replicate. Its open center draws bees and butterflies in all season long, giving you a cutting garden that works as hard for wildlife as it does for you.

How to Grow It

Plant your tubers in full sun after your last frost, in well-drained soil enriched with compost. Pinch the main stem when it reaches knee height to encourage branching and more blooms. Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, and feed every two weeks with a low-nitrogen fertilizer once buds appear. Stake early, as the stems are strong but the plant will grow tall. Deadhead regularly to keep the flowers coming from midsummer all the way to first frost. In colder climates, lift and store your tubers after the foliage blackens in fall.
