Jomanda fills a bucket and clears it out by noon. The secret is that coral-orange that shifts toward rust as the season deepens, riding on dark stems that make every bloom pop from across the room. Growers reach for it first when the cutting garden has to pay its way.

How to Grow It

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil and pinch when your plant has several sets of leaves to push out more stems. Jomanda is a late-season producer, so let it build. The more you cut, the harder it works for you. Harvest when blooms are three-quarters open with petals that feel firm at the back of the head, then sear stem ends in very hot water and condition in cool water before arranging.
