Informal Decorative · 8–10"PinkJohn Wickey (1983)United States

Islander was bred in United States by John Wickey in 1983. Islander opens in a slow sunrise of pink, the outer petals easing into cream while the heart stays saturated. Every bloom lands on a different gradient, so a row in the field reads like a painter's test strip. Islander is an informal decorative dahlia that opens 8–10" blooms in pink.

Growing Islander

Stake early once stems pass knee height, because the blooms grow heavy and the hollow canes snap in wind. Pinch the terminal shoot above the fourth leaf pair to push side branching and multiply your cut count. Disbud the two side buds below each terminal if you want cleaner, larger flowers for bouquets. Watch for earwigs hiding inside the petal folds at dawn.
