Informal Decorative · 10–15"RedK. Sherlock (2006)

Red petals open and then twist, flashing a pale gold reverse every time the wind moves. Named for the Welsh bass-baritone, it carries the same operatic weight in the garden: one plant commands a whole border. Exhibition growers in the UK and US keep it in rotation because judges still stop walking when they pass it. It was introduced by K. Sherlock in 2006.

Growing Bryn Terfel

Stake at planting time, because tall stems loaded with heavy heads will snap in a single storm. Pinch the growing tip once you see four leaf pairs to force side shoots, and disbud side buds to push energy into a single terminal bloom. Watch for powdery mildew on the lower leaves late in the season, and feed through mid-summer to keep the flower count up.

Spacing
Space roughly 2–3 ft apart
Staking
Stake early — stems carry heavy blooms and lean in wind
