American Dawn is a formal decorative dahlia that opens 6–8" blooms in pink. Color tumbles through coral, peach, and raspberry as blooms open, then deepens to bronze and plum by season's end. Petal reverses and stems carry a dark purple flush that makes every bloom read richer in photographs than in person. It was introduced by Komen in 2007.

Growing American Dawn

Pinch the growing tip when young plants reach knee height to multiply stem count. Stake early because the dark wiry stems carry heavy heads that can tip in a storm. Disbud side shoots if you want the biggest show blooms, or leave them for armloads of spray. Color shifts toward deeper bronze and plum as nights cool, so save some ground for late cutting.
