Akita
The dahlia that wins 60 awards and still shows up for your garden.
Akita opens with deep crimson petals that melt into a warm golden heart, with ivory tips catching the light from every angle. This is the variety serious growers reach for when they want a bloom that commands a room, performing from midsummer straight through the first frost. If you grow dahlias to make people stop and stare, Akita belongs in your patch.

How to Grow It
Plant your tubers in full sun once the soil has warmed and all frost risk has passed. Pinch the central growing tip early to encourage more branching and more blooms. Stake plants before they need it, as these get tall and the blooms are heavy. Water consistently at the base and avoid wetting the foliage. Disbud side shoots if you want your largest possible blooms for cutting. Lift and store tubers after the first frost in a cool, dry, frost-free location.
