Informal Decorative · 8–9"PurpleVan Wijk (1999)Netherlands

Vancouver is an informal decorative dahlia that opens 8–9" blooms in purple. A Dutch sport of Akita released in 1999, Vancouver produces massive heads in rich royal purple, each petal frosted at the edge with a clean band of white. Long, gently cupped petals give the flower a softly incurved look that reads both bold and refined in mixed plantings or cut arrangements. It was bred in Netherlands by Van Wijk in 1999.

Growing Vancouver

Stake early and tie in as stems lengthen, since the heavy heads can snap thick stalks in wind. Pinch at four leaf pairs to push side branching, then disbud to the terminal flower for the largest, show-worthy heads. Feed with a low-nitrogen fertilizer once buds form and water deeply at the base to keep foliage dry.

Spacing
Space roughly 2–3 ft apart
Staking
Stake early — stems carry heavy blooms and lean in wind
