Verrone's Obsidian is a novelty open center dahlia that opens 3–5" blooms in purple. Deep cabernet petals curl back around a bright gold center, reading almost black in low light and pure plum in full sun. Roland Verrone spent years chasing this color saturation before finally registering the cultivar in 2013. It was bred in United States by Roland Verrone in 2011.

Growing Verrone's Obsidian

Pinch the center stem when plants reach knee-height to push more branching. Stake early since tall stems carry heavy heads that can flop in wet weather. Cut blooms just as petals unfurl for the longest hold in bouquets. Full sun deepens the near-black tone, while afternoon shade keeps the gold centers vivid.
