Le Baron is an informal decorative dahlia that opens 4–6" blooms in purple. Deep purple petals unfurl so dark they read almost black until sunlight catches the edges. Aanhane released the cultivar in 1995 and it still holds its own against newer purples because the color stays consistent bloom after bloom. It was bred in Netherlands by Aanhane in 1995.

Growing Le Baron

Stake stems at planting since the upright habit can bend under a heavy bloom load after summer storms. Pinch the growing tip once true leaves appear to encourage branching. Watch for early buds in midsummer, and disbud side shoots if you want fewer but larger flowers. Feed with a low-nitrogen fertilizer once buds set.

Spacing
Space roughly 2–3 ft apart
Staking
Stake early — stems carry heavy blooms and lean in wind
