Alpen Sami is a novelty open-centered dahlia from the Alpen Gardens breeding program, one of more than 100 varieties Bill McClaren registered from his Kalispell, Montana nursery. The ray petals radiate in one flat layer around an exposed disc, a structure that reads differently in a bed than a fully double head does. McClaren's open-centered work from the early 2000s pulled from the orchid-form tradition while pushing into territory the standard classification codes had not yet mapped. It was bred in United States by Bill McClaren in 2003.

Growing Alpen Sami

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil once the threat of frost has passed. Stake early so the open-centered heads do not twist on the stem when they fill out. Pinch the growing tip once plants reach a useful height to encourage more branching and a longer run of flowers through the season.
