Waltzing Mathilda is a peony dahlia that opens 3–4" blooms in orange. Sunset-toned blooms shift through coral, peach, and soft orange with blushes of cherry and hints of yellow near the open golden center. Pointed, slightly twisted ray petals give each flower a tousled, painterly look. It is a 2008 Netherlands introduction.

Growing Waltzing Mathilda

Plant tubers in full sun after the last frost in well-drained, humus-rich soil. Pinch the growing tip once plants are established to encourage branching and more flowers. Water deeply and consistently during dry spells, keeping soil moist but never waterlogged. Feed with a balanced low-nitrogen fertilizer through the growing season. Stake early, since stems can lean under the weight of blooms. Cut regularly for arrangements to encourage continued flowering. Lift tubers after first frost in cold climates and store dry and cool over winter.
