Aloha dahlia bloom

The Dahlia Hub product image

Semi-Cactus Β· 6–8"YellowGeisert (1986)United States

Late July light catches a starburst of narrow lemon petals, each one dipped in scarlet as if singed by a tropical sunset. That two-tone flare comes from tip coloring that paints every floret individually, so no two blooms ever match exactly. An American classic raised in the Bridge View garden, it has kept its beach party mood in borders for four decades. It was bred in United States by Geisert in 1986.

Growing Aloha

Stake early, because the stems shoot up fast once summer heat arrives and the tipped blooms grow top heavy after rain. Pinch the growing tip when young plants reach knee height to force bushier branching and more flowers. Give full sun, steady water at the roots, and a low nitrogen feed, then lift the tubers after frost blackens the foliage and store them cool and dry.
