Black Jack
The stem everyone at the farmers market asks about.
Set one stem on a table and it becomes the center of gravity in the room. Black Jack earns that reaction through its near-black petals — long, pointed, curled at the edges — that absorb light instead of reflecting it, making every other color around it pop. Florists, flower farmers, and exhibition growers all grow it for the same reason: nothing else commands an arrangement quite like this.

How to Grow It
Plant your tuber in full sun after the last frost date. Pinch the center shoot when your plant has several sets of leaves to push out more branching stems and a bigger harvest. Stake early, your plant will get tall and the flower heads are heavy enough to snap stems in wind. Water consistently and feed with a low-nitrogen fertilizer once buds appear. The dark color intensifies as temperatures cool in late summer, so later plantings can actually reward you with the best blooms of the season.
