Growing Lady Darlene

Stake early and tie in loosely as stems thicken, because the heavy gold-and-red heads will topple a thin cane in one storm. Pinch the growing tip once you see true leaves stacking, then let side shoots race to catch the mid-season window. Disbud the two flanking buds on each stem if you want showpiece blooms instead of a looser spray. Watch for earwigs tucked inside the opening petals and shake them out at harvest.
