Growing Mrs. Eileen

Stake early with a stout support or a corral of twine, since heavy heads can tip a young plant in a summer storm. Pinch the center out early to encourage branching and a stronger stem count. Water deeply at the base in dry weather and mulch to keep roots cool. Feed with a low-nitrogen fertilizer after buds form to fuel blooms without soft growth. Watch for earwigs inside opening flowers and rinse them out with a hose. Cut freely through the season, taking stems deep into the foliage to keep new buds coming.
