Incurved Cactus · 4–6"PurpleDick & Susan Ambrose (1997)United States

Camano Thunder is an incurved cactus dahlia that opens 4–6" blooms in purple. Spiky rolled petals in wine-leaning purple give this bloom a crackle of energy on a long cut stem. The quilled form holds its shape through heat, so a bucket cut at sunrise still looks electric by the time it hits the arranger's table. It was bred in United States by Dick & Susan Ambrose in 1997.

Growing Camano Thunder

Stake each plant early, because those quilled heads catch wind like little sails. Pinch once the plants throw their fourth set of leaves so side branches take over and stretch long cutting stems. Disbud the two buds flanking each terminal if you want show-ready singles, or leave them for garden display.

Spacing
Space roughly 2–3 ft apart
Staking
Stake early — stems carry heavy blooms and lean in wind
