Kenora Macop-B opens the size of a dinner plate and holds a color so deep it reads black in late-day light, then burgundy when the sun catches the fringed petal tips. Named by Gordon Leroux for the cancer medication he was prescribed, the variety has carried his Kenora, Ontario work onto show benches and farm stands across three continents. Growers who want one unforgettable focal bloom keep coming back to this one. It was bred in Canada by Gordon Leroux in 1992.

Growing Kenora Macop-B

Stake Kenora Macop-B at planting because the tall plants carry very heavy heads on long, upright stems. Pinch the central shoot once four leaf sets are showing to build side branches that hold the weight. Disbud each lateral to one terminal if you want the largest show-ready blooms, or leave pairs for cutting. Feed a low-nitrogen bloom food from bud set onward and water deeply at the base. Cut in the cool of morning when petals are nearly fully open, since the color continues to darken after harvest.
