The stem everyone at the farmers market asks about.

Semi-Cactus · 7–9"RedUnited States

A single stem drops the conversation in a room. Mingus Alex pours deep crimson and burgundy through petals so full and layered that light reads differently across each one. It is the variety dark-palette florists and flower farmers plant in quantity because it performs all season, not just once. It also holds its form on the show bench.

Growing Mingus Alex

Plant your tubers in full sun after frost, with the eye facing up. Pinch the central growing tip when the plant reaches knee height to encourage strong lateral branches and more blooms. Stake early. This variety is a tall grower and the large blooms put real weight on the stems. Water deeply but let the soil dry slightly between sessions. Feed with low-nitrogen fertilizer once buds begin to form, and deadhead regularly to keep your plant producing into autumn.

Spacing: Space roughly 2–3 ft apart
Staking: Stake early — stems carry heavy blooms and lean in wind
