Collarette · 3–4.5"RedNetherlands

Night Butterfly opens flat, open faces where broad velvet-crimson rays circle a frilled white ruffle flushed deep burgundy at its base. A gold center disc punches through the shadow and pulls pollinators from across the row. Stems come long and wiry, the blooms face outward and upward, and the dark-to-light contrast photographs beautifully against dusky foliage.

Growing Night Butterfly

Plant tubers after the last frost in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Stake early since the wiry stems can whip in wind once blooms open. Pinch the central shoot above the fourth leaf pair to push side branching and more flowers. Water deeply two or three times a week once buds form, and feed with a low-nitrogen bloom booster every couple of weeks. Watch for earwigs sheltering in the open faces and trap them with rolled newspaper at dusk. Cut when the outer ray petals have fully opened but the center disc is still tight for the longest hold in a bouquet. Lift tubers after the first hard frost blackens the foliage, then divide and store cool and just barely damp.
