Tempest is a formal decorative dahlia that opens 4–5" blooms in pink. Coral and raspberry warm up the bed at dusk, with a faint lavender haze on the petal edges that keeps the color from ever reading one-note. Petals sunbleach as they age, so the bloom you cut on Monday reads lighter by Friday while new stems keep pumping out behind it. It was bred in United States by Swan Island Dahlias in 1997.

Growing Tempest

Pinch at roughly a foot tall to force side shoots and give yourself a longer picking window. Stake early because the compact habit still carries a heavy flush of blooms. Cut deep and often once flowering starts, and the plant will reward you with sturdy stems into first frost. Watch the color shift as petals age and harvest at three-quarters open to catch the richest tone.
