Plant tubers in full sun after your last frost date, setting them horizontally at about a hand's depth. Pinch the central shoot above the third set of leaves to push into a bushy, multi-stemmed shape that produces more harvestable flowers. Water deeply but infrequently once shoots appear, and avoid saturating the soil before sprouts emerge to prevent rot. Stake early in the season, as mature plants grow tall and benefit from support in windy conditions.
