Hy Patti is a formal decorative dahlia that opens 6–8" blooms in orange. Medium blooms open in a clean, even orange with petals that curl slightly inward, forming a full face that holds its shape well into the heat of August. Cool mornings pull a soft copper and pink flush into early flowers, while peak-summer stems settle into a saturated persimmon. It was bred in Canada by Wayne Holland in 2006.

Growing Hy Patti

Pinch once your plants reach about a foot tall so you trade a lazy center shoot for several branching stems loaded with buds. Stake early; stems run tall and benefit from support before buds set. Cut at three-quarter bloom when petals on the underside still feel firm, then condition in cool water overnight. Feed with a low-nitrogen fertilizer through midsummer to keep the color saturated as nights start to cool.

Spacing
Space roughly 2–3 ft apart
Staking
Stake early — stems carry heavy blooms and lean in wind
