Set one stem in a jar on a wooden table and watch people walk over to look. Peach and apricot petals graduate toward a pale yellow center while a deep maroon outline traces every edge, giving each bloom a hand-painted quality that reads as impossibly intricate up close. Introduced by Swan Island in 2008, it blooms early, produces prolifically, and multiplies tubers generously at season end, which is why flower farmers keep coming back to it year after year.

How to Grow It
Plant in full sun with rich, well-drained soil. Your plant will start pushing blooms ahead of most varieties, so stake early and get your buckets ready. Pinch the central bud once the plant has three sets of leaves to encourage more lateral stems. The deep red of the petal undersides intensifies in cooler temperatures, so you will see the richest color in late summer evenings and into fall. Divide tubers at the end of the season and expect a generous clump from a single tuber.
