Hollyhill Black Widow is a waterlily dahlia that opens 4–6" blooms in red. Velvety petals glow scarlet at the tips and sink to a smoky, almost-black core. The color reads gothic in morning light and burgundy at dusk, a shift you rarely see from one flower. It was bred in United States by Ted & Margaret Kennedy in 2007.

Growing Hollyhill Black Widow

Stake early since the stems reach four feet and lean under wet blooms. Pinch at four sets of leaves to build branching for steady summer production. Water deeply at the base and keep the foliage dry to duck powdery mildew in late summer. Watch for earwigs hiding in the dark petals before you bring stems indoors.
